Last weekend, I made the trip down to Playground RC in Yakima, Washington to participate in the Spring Shootout, the kickoff round of the Northwest Championship Tour, our premier outdoor offroad series here in the Northwest United States. It seemed like there was a lot more excitement heading into outdoors this year than past years and my suspicions were confirmed as the total entry count ended right about the 350 mark, which is about 100 more than what the opening race usually gets. This was the first year for the new venue of the Spring Shootout, with the previous venue unfortunately being shut down in Wenatchee, Washington towards the end of last year. Now it was time for Yakima to carry the torch, and it was definitely the most well organized and executed event I have been to, perhaps only second to the Silver State race I attended last month at RC Tracks Las Vegas.

The vehicles were awesome, and the M3 Hole Shots and M4 Electroshots and Fugitives were hooked up! Read the rest of this entry »

I attended Silver State for the first time this past weekend. It was an epic event. I am happy I finally got to cross this race off my bucket list but it won’t be the last time I go there, that’s for sure! I showed up fairly unprepared. I had to leave a lot of stuff at home, and this was only my second race ever driving my E817. It took me most of the weekend to get close to where I wanted to be with the car. I never really achieved the sweet spot but I am satisfied with my progress with the car, just wish it wouldn’t have taken all weekend.

I used M4, M3, and X3 Hole Shots and Electro Shots throughout the weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

Made the trek down south to go race some carpet again with the Diehard RC crew. Honestly I wasn’t that excited since I was just one week fresh off the first dirt race of the year, but I’ll never pass up an opportunity to race, so I got up bright and early after a closing shift the night before and drove an hour to Marysville.

The track was much more challenging this week than it had been at the Hobby expo race three weeks prior. This track was faster and did not flow as well and was much more demanding of my car setup and suspension so the D413 didn’t feel as good as it did but nonetheless I was ready to race.  Read the rest of this entry »

At the end of every outdoor season, at the final 1:8 race of the year at the finale round of the Northwest Championship Tour in Pasco, Washington, we all feverishly prepare our cars for one final push on the dirt for the season. For most of the region, this will be the last time any driver touches a radio for the remainder of the calendar year. The race ends, we receive our series awards, take pictures, thank our sponsors for their support, and we go home and we wait. Some of us continue to travel around the Pacific Northwest or farther to race our 1:10 vehicles, but the attitude isn’t the same- we are all waiting for 1:8 season to start, as the carpet merely holds us over. For five months some of us rip around doing 12-14 second laps on a tight high grip track, while others simply stare at their vehicles. Eventually, the middle of February comes around, and we prepare our 1:8 vehicles again. Dirt racing has returned, and its name is Cabin Fever.

This past weekend was another installment of the Northwest Model Hobby Expo held annually at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Washington. Prior to last year, this show primarily held host to a number of model boat and plane clubs, drifters, and crawlers as well. A nice slow pace for those who enjoy the detail oriented side of the RC industry. Last year at this show, however, Diehard RC, a group of individuals who sought to fill the void created by our loss of our closest clay indoor track, brought the introduction of speed.

I attended another round of the traveling turf series this past Saturday. I made some overhaul changes to the D413 which I am stoked to stay have paid off. I sort of broke the rule about making too many changes but I felt this was an important step to stepping out of my comfort zone.

I had two mediocre qualifying runs which put me 5th on the grid. I tend to peak in the Mains anyways but this was less than I was hoping for since I like to place higher to give myself a better shot. The car felt very good but it was tough to adjust to the radically different driving style it needed to be quick, so it took me most of the day to figure that out. Read the rest of this entry »
