On the weekend of April 27th -29th I attended Rc Pro South Rnd 2 in Lafayette, LA at Finishline Raceway. The Track was Fun and Fast, loved the back straight with divided lanes.

Practice and Qualifing

In practice my MBX6R was hooked up even though the track was loose. M3 Blockades worked very well however tire of choice for me was the M3 Caliber. In short course M3 Calibers as well. I felt pretty confident heading into qualifying. Best of 4 rounds ended up hurting me quite a bit as new clutch bearing failures ruined two of my four rounds, ended up qualifying 5th in B. Short Course went better qualifying 7th in A.

Mains

B Main Pro Buggy 30 minutes. This was a stacked B main, starting 5th I planned on taking it easy the first 10 minutes. However there was a pile up in the 2nd corner so it was time to make my move. The first 10 minutes went by pretty quick ran in 1, 2, & 3 for the next 20 minutes. I was pushing it on fuel and knew I was really close to the 30min mark on stops. I was running 2nd right behind 1st bumper to bumper when the horn went off race over. This was right when we crossed the loop, I made it halfway around track and ran out of fuel. Ended up 13th overall.

Overall I had an awesome time with old and new friends.

Thanks Pro-Line for the Great Products.

When I’ve bought my first R/C truck in the early 90’s, the choice was very limited. In fact, there were only two options, 2wd buggy or 2wd truck. Just to point you in time, the next most common question was, mechanical speed controller or electronic speed controller! My choice ended on a Team Associated RC10T, the one with the narrow front wheels and all white plastic parts. The 2wd stadium truck was the heavy metal class!
Today, things have changed quite a bit. There are many more options when comes the time to buy a R/C truck. Among all the R/C trucks on the market, I felt like something was missing. Why there is no 4×4 electric stadium trucks? HPI had released the (now discontinued) RS4 MT many years ago but since then, N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Okay, maybe one or two unknown companies sell 1/10 4×4 electric stadium trucks but not the R/C top names!
I’m a hard believer that 4×4 electric stadium trucks will (must) be the next big thing in R/C. That’s why I’ve decided to not wait for any manufacturers and to go ahead and build my own one, my Team Associated RC10T 4×4!

The base:
For this project, I’ve used a Team Associated SC10 4×4 kit version. I had run the truck few times so I know the truck will be durable and will perform very well on any surfaces. The SC10 4×4 was, for me, the easiest (laziest?) path to build a 4×4 stadium truck.
The very first step was to remove the front and rear bumpers and both nerf bars. Hey! It already started looking like a stadium truck!

Tires and wheels:
When I’ve first thought about this project, my tires choice was already done. I love the Pro-Line Calibers, this was natural for me to install them on the truck.

Now the wheels…For this project, I needed 2.2” stadium truck white dish wheels with a 12mm hex. Only two options available for me, Losi or Kyosho. I’ve finally picked up two pairs of Losi white dish wheels designed for the 22T. Originally, the center of the wheels is too thick for the SC10 4×4’s axles. I had to remove 2-3mm of plastic out of the center where the wheel nut goes before I can screw the wheels to the truck. A special note to the purists, I feel sorry to have installed Losi wheels on a Team Associated truck and vice versa LOL!

Body:
Finding a truck body that fits a short course chassis is not really easy. The traditional 1/10 electric stadium trucks bodies are too short to fit while most truggy bodies are a bit too long to fit properly. After an intensive brain storming session, I remembered that I have an old Pro-Line Shift body in a shelf. The body was still new and packaged because the front forwarded bodies have hit the market before I had time to paint and install my Shift body.

My major concern was the body posts and the wheels’ wells. The Shift body is made to fit a truggy but with little imagination, I’ve managed to make it fit. I first had to flip the body posts so they can go through a flat section of the body. I’ve also lowered the body posts to the maximum. Team Associated had the brilliant idea to make the posts square, so it was really easy to drill them to attach the setscrew through the shock towers. Next I had to drill the upper section for the body clip.
To adjust the body, I’ve fully compressed the front suspension and fully turned the wheels left and right to make sure the tires were not rubbing on the chassis. Once I’ve decided where drill the hole for the front body posts, the rear end was looking good as it was. The rear wheels are not fully centered in the wheels’ wells. I’ve cut a piece of lexan to add a little more clearance. The rear section of the body is slightly too wide. I’d like to have a little more than the ¼” of clearance between the inside of the wheel and the body but it is fine as it is at this moment.

Electronics:
I simply used what I already had in the truck, LRP iX8 ESC, LRP X12L motor, Reedy 7.4v LiPo pack and DS1015 steering servo. No need to spend any extra money for the electronics, this combo is awesome!

Testing:
WOW is the best word to describe how the truck performs. On hard packed or loose dirt, grass and asphalt, the truck has all the traction of a 4×4 truck with the agility of a stadium truck. My RC10T 4×4 has incredible cornering capabilities and awesome straight acceleration. It is like driving a T4.1 on steroids, point and shoot! This is the easiest project I’ve done but it is also the one that I have the most fun with.

Conclusion:
What’s the most fun about this project is that it has only cost me few bucks to realize. When I look to the final project, I can’t stop thinking of the few bucks and effort Team Associated had to invest to have this truck into production. Body posts, body, wheels are they only parts I had to buy for the project.
Is my truck race legal? I really didn’t follow any rules concerning the wheelbase or the weight when I’ve built the truck. The only rule I’ve followed was the fun rule, you know the rule that makes R/C enthusiasts smiling.

Last weekend’s trophy race in Enfield, CT was great. I started the qualifiers running Pro-Line’s M4 Snipers, but quickly realized I was running the wrong tire for the track environment. I still ran a great run and ended up being the TQ for the round. So far there was one more race, and local Kyosho driver Jimmy James took over the TQ spot by a second. Round two I changed my tires over and tunes my setup. The battle was intense for the TQ position. Jimmy James and I swapped between top spot at least seven times in the five minute run. Due to the fact that we were running each other harder slowed our pace down by around two seconds compared to our first round, even though I stepped up my hot lap by almost half of a second.

In the main I wanted to try a slightly harder tire, so I went with Pro-Line’s World Champion M3 Blockade tires. I put a new air filter in thanks to Mike, and got ready for the race. The second the horn went off to start the race, Jimmy and I took off away from the pack. The first three corners Jimmy took the front, and once he swung a bit wide I tried to pass him, not realizing I didn’t have the speed to complete the quad. Jimmy took the lead for the next 15 minutes. We swapped the lead back and forth with only two laps to go and I had the lead until we came up on a back marker that went the wrong way, leading me to spin out. Jimmy took the win by about one second over me.

Once everything was over, it turned out to be a good day. I hot lapped the field in the main by .3 seconds. My Pro-Line tires performed great and ended up with no wear, and my motor ran like a champ without any issues!

This is a pair of Square Fuzzie Short Course Tires. Pro-Line is bringing back one of the most successful and iconic tread patterns of all time; the World Champion Square Fuzzie. The original Square Fuzzie was so advanced for its time that it dominated the race tracks for many years and was never duplicated. Now, Pro-Line is proud to introduce the all new and improved Square Fuzzie for your Short Course Truck! The new Square Fuzzie tires feature countless square micro-pins laid out in a traction inducing grid pattern that will stick to the track like Velcro. The long center bars provide tons of forward bite and improved wear over the Original. These tires are ideal for any indoor/outdoor hard-packed dirt track where bar-type tires are not getting the job done. The new Square Fuzzies will give you the confidence inspiring forward and side bite to propel you to the front!

Don’t just take our word for it, get the new Square Fuzzies now and be the first to dominate your track with Pro-Line’s proven micro-pin technology!

Pro-Line is proud to release the meanest looking and best-selling body ever created designed specifically for your Traxxas Slayer Pro: the Flo-Tek. The Flo-Tek was the first SC body specifically designed to minimize the short-course body parachute effect! If you have ever raced or bashed a short-course truck, you know that SC bodies act like parachutes when going over jumps, causing you to lose control and crash. Pro-Line’s new Flo-Tek SC body features futuristic styling coupled with large vent holes that allow air to flow through eliminating aerodynamic drag. The locations and size of the vents were designed to maximize air flow through the body while keeping the aggressive and high-tech look. Don’t get caught in the wind while the competition passes you by, Get Pro-Line’s new Flo-Tek SC body today!

This is a BullDog Clear Body for the Tamiya TRF502X Buggy. Bodies have an undeniable effect on handling and performance. For 2012, Pro-Line has improved upon the BullDog design and developed the most advanced body yet: the 2012 BullDog body now for the Tamiya TRF502X Buggy. Pro-Line took great care in refining the design for 2012 to create even more stability with enhanced steering to gain an advantage on the track. The windshield is steeper to create more down force over the front wheels and the roof ridges have been raised to channel the air flow over the middle of the body for increased high-speed stability. The rear of the roof has been lowered and fins have been added to achieve stable air flow over the body. The fins also add rigidity to the body to increase aerodynamic efficiency. This is a must have TRF502X body for the new racing season!

This is a pair of 1:5 scale Blockade XTR No Foam Tires. After countless hours of designing, building and testing, Pro-Line is ready to unleash the all-new Blockade tire for your 1:5 scale Short Course Truck. From the beginning, the Blockade was designed to be the ultimate race tire for any track condition. The Blockade features large, perfectly spaced lugs that rip into the dirt for incredible traction and has plenty of meat to last through super long race sessions. For super loose conditions, the Blockade tire can be tuned for more aggressive traction by trimming out alternating knobs. The inside of the Blockade contains unbelievably detailed webbing that strengthens the tire carcass and prevents excessive tire expansion. If you own a Baja 5SC or Losi 5ive-T, then you need a set of Pro-Line Blockades!

Round 2 of the hotly contested JBRL Nitro series went off this past weekend at Revelation Raceway in a major way. Over 200 entries showed up, and the list of the top pros read like a national event: King, Cavalieri, Maifield, Drake, Truhe, Amezcua, Hartson, Saxton, Wernimont, were all in attendance. Daniel Adams was there with the big Pro-Line truck, giving all us racers the great trackside support Pro-Line is known for. Dana and the Revelation Raceway crew installed a unique layout for this event a few weeks ago, and I spent the last three weeks running 2-3 times per week getting ready for this race, including sneaking some practice in on Friday the day before the event.

I ran both my Kyosho MP9 TKI2 buggy and ST-RR Evo truggy in one practice session a piece on Saturday morning, just to make sure everything was ready to rock. Both felt extremely good, my King Edition Orion CRF 5 ports humming along rather nicely – plenty of top end down Revelation’s super long front straight, and very manageable bottom end on the rather loose surface. I was definitely ready to roll for the first round of qualifying.

In round 1 of truggy qualifying, I got off to a great start and laid down a near flawless run, only one small bobble that cost me a few seconds. My time held up and I set the TQ mark for round 1 by about 5 seconds over second place.

In my first buggy qualifying session, I wanted to keep the momentum going. Being in the last heat of 4 heats of Open Buggy, I knew what time I had to get to set the TQ, and with Revelation becoming extremely rough during the later rounds of qualifying, I knew the pressure would be on to get in a good run early on. I got off to a great start, had one mistake that cost me about five seconds, but still was fast enough to set the overall TQ by 10 seconds over second place.

I was definitely feeling good, my tire choices were spot on for truggy and buggy – M3 Hole Shot VTR for truggy and M3 Tazers for buggy. Everything fell into place nicely in the first round, so I felt like I could experiment a little bit with setup for round 2.

I kept my truggy setup exactly the same for round two of qualifying – I don’t tend to change the ST-RR Evo setup all that often as it’s so dialed to begin with. I ran M3 Hole Shot VTR again, and again had a great run, this time completely flawless. I even bested my own TQ time by 2 seconds on a track that was arguably more difficult in the second round due to the ruts and holes forming.

In round 2 of buggy qualifying, I decided to try a different tire and compound in preparation for what I may run in the main – with a little guidance from my coach Paul King, I decided to run M4 Blockades. This was definitely the right move – even though the ambient temps were fairly high, around 90 degrees, the M4 compound held up nicely and provided a bit more traction over the M3 compound, while still maintaining a very confident, “non-edgy” feel. They were so good, that I was on pace to break my round 1 TQ time, but had two mistakes that cost me and I ended up about 4 seconds slower than round 1. However, I was the only person to do 9 laps in the 2nd round, and because of my round 1 time, I had the buggy TQ locked up – 2 for 2 on the day!

In the truggy main, I stuck with what I knew worked, M4 Hole Shot VTR and kept the ST-RR Evo setup the same. I got out to an early lead and never looked back. Even though the track was fairly rough, the Evo handled the bumps with ease and the Hole Shot VTR were definitely hooked up. I won by a decisive margin, putting a lap on the field up to 2nd place, and I finished right behind 2nd meaning I was getting ready to put him a lap down as well.

As the buggy main drew closer, I was debating about changing the setup a little bit as the track was really getting blown out. However, I knew the main would come down to driving, not necessarily the setup, so I stuck with the M4 Blockades and kept the MP9 setup the same. My start didn’t quite go as planned as I flipped in the 2nd turn and was quickly running dead last after 2 turns. I had my work cut out for me to say the least. However, I was still in touch with the lead pack and made my way through the field, picking off guys one or two at a time. My setup was definitely on and I kept turning consistent laps, and re-took the lead about 3 minutes into the race and checked out. I ended up putting a lap on the entire field and won going away.

This weekend made me 4 for 4 on the season at JBRL – TQing the first two rounds of buggy and truggy qualifying, and winning both buggy and truggy mains. It’s been a great start to the series, and I’m definitely hungry for more. My Byron’s Fuel has been awesome this season and gives me plenty of power and keeps the tune consistent throughout the day. My Lucky7 filters and engine sealant work great, and the convenience of the pre-oiled filter makes it easy to change filters at tracks like Revelation which are on the dusty side.

I want to give a special thanks to Dana and Alan of Revelation Raceway for their effort in giving us racers a great place to race, to Daniel Adams of Pro-Line for his awesome support and help in the pits for the truggy main, and to Steve Godwin for helping my Dad out in the pits for the buggy main. A huge thanks to Paul and Cody King for their amazing support, they have been instrumental in my growth in this sport and have taught me so much. And of course, a big thanks to you all, my sponsors, for the awesome support this season!

The next couple races coming up are Round 6 of the Grass Roots series (in 2 weeks) at Pro-Line’s track, which will be awesome, and Round 3 of the JBRL series at Hemet Raceway will be coming up in early June. I’m looking forward to both these events!

Thanks again, and stay tuned for future reports!

–SG
